Visiting Kondana Caves During a Karjat Stay

The Kondana Caves are an ancient group of Buddhist rock-cut caves in the hills near Karjat. Reaching them involves a walk, so plan the visit carefully.

What to expect

The caves are reached on foot through hilly terrain. Trail conditions change with the season and recent weather, so check current conditions locally before you set out rather than relying on old reports.

Go prepared

  • Start early and return well before dark
  • Go with a group or someone who knows the route
  • Carry water, a snack and a charged phone
  • Wear shoes with good grip

In the monsoon

Wet rock and streams make the walk harder and riskier. If it has rained heavily, consider a gentler plan.

Respect the site

The caves are a heritage site. Do not climb on carvings, leave no litter and keep noise down.

Fitting it into your stay

Plan it as the one outing of the day and come back to a late lunch and a swim. Ask us about trekking nearby when you enquire.
